Emotional Intelligence(EI)
Emotions are the primary source of human energy, aspiration and drive, activating our innermost feelings and purpose in life, and transforming them from things we think about, to values we live. Whereas only part of our success in life is attributable to intellect. Other qualities: trust, integrity, authenticity, creativity, honesty, presence and resilience, are at least as important. These 'other intelligences' are collectively described as Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while other claim it is an inborn characteristic.
Exactly what is Emotional Intelligence? The term encompasses the following five characteristics and abilities:
1. Self-awareness--knowing your emotions, recognizing feelings as they occur, and discriminating between them
2. Mood management--handling feelings so they're relevant to the current situation and you react appropriately
3. Self-motivation--"gathering up" your feelings and directing yourself towards a goal, despite self-doubt, inertia, and impulsiveness
4. Empathy--recognizing feelings in others and tuning into their verbal and nonverbal cues
5. Managing relationships--handling interpersonal interaction, conflict resolution, and negotiations
Why Do We Need Emotional Intelligence? Research in brain-based learning suggests that emotional health is fundamental to effective learning. According to a report from the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs, the most critical element for a student's success in school is an understanding of how to learn .It is a simple truth that people would rather work with an incompetent person with good interpersonal skills than a highly competent person who behaves like a jerk. In our daily life or at work/ projects we simply do not have the luxury of dealing only with people we like – we must facilitate the ability to work together with people of all stripes and temperaments. Emotional intelligence is what helps you do it well. The key ingredients for this understanding are:
Confidence
Curiosity
Intentionality
Self-control
Relatedness
Capacity to communicate
Ability to cooperate
These traits are all aspects of Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is a master aptitude, a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities, either facilitating or interfering with them. One can improve their Emotional Intelligence . Following are the key points to improve your EI:-
1- An attitude of wanting to learn
2- A feeling that you need a change in your current circumstances
3- An openness to new ideas
4- A commitment to action on the new ideas
Good luck and keep smiling!
I love to read on EI techniques. keep posting.
I am not sure exactly what I can do with this knowledge - perhaps you have some suggestions of a personal nature you wish to impart?
Again a marvelous article. I believe, that EI is not an in born capability. It is actually, what we develop and learn over the passage of time. In my opinion, like IQ level, we should also test EI level. Believe me, it can make wonders, if we check the EI level of students and employees and try to improve it with the various techniques. Irum you must present this proposal to the pertinent quarters.
Wishing you all the best and thank you again for sharing this with us.
